Halloween Pumpkin using the Illustrator Width Tool

You knew this was coming given my predilection for all things macabre and creepy, well maybe you didn’t. In any case, to celebrate the imminent yearly arrival of Halloween, I would like to present a tutorial inspired by John Schwegel’s illustration style, specifically his Zombie Pumpkin. The focus of the tutorial, aside from creating a ghoulish squash, is to introduce the use of Illustrator’s Width Tool (Shift+W) that was introduced with the release of CS5. Using the Width Tool will allow those of you without a tablet to create variable-width line work in your vector illustrations using only a mouse or trackpad.
